In my hometown, racist people always complained when I posted a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. in the window with the message "Liquor Store closed to honor Mr. King".
They would say things to me like, "Why are you celebrating a nigger?" True story. Those were the kinds of customers I had in good ole Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Michael, there are idiots in every town I guess. When my racist acquaintances ask me why I honor a black man, (I'm still stunned that color actually matters to some people.) I respond that he wasn't a black man, he was a great man.
Humans are so clannish. I wonder if we will ever truly be color-blind? I see progress, but until we replace noticing the the difference with celebrating them, we are doomed to never truly evolve.
Hi Nancy! Humans are a lot of things, but because this blog is NC-17, I won't go there! I think someday in the distant future, when the races are blended to the point where we can't tell anymore, we'll find something new to fight over. We seem to have this need to make ourselves feel better by putting others down.
Jennifer, It's amazing that a portrait of a man can evoke such emotion. No caption was necessary. Besides, anything I write would pale in comparison to his words.
The guy always looks so motivated whenever I see him. He really had a vision.
ReplyDeleteThere were so many great quotes from Mr. King to choose from, I decided to give his photo more power by letting it stand alone.
